General description

PHD finger protein 14 (UniProt: O94880) is encoded by the PHF14 (also known as KIAA0783) gene (Gene ID: 9678) in human. PHF14 is a member of the PHD finger protein family that serves as a chromatin-binding protein. It contains four putative PHD fingers, two coiled-coil regions, and four zinc fingers. PHF14 is highly conserved from C. elegans to humans and is considered as a transcriptional regulator of target gene expression. PHF14 has been identified as a regulator of mesenchyme growth in embryonic tissues. Two isoforms of PHF14 have been described that are produced by alternative splicing. PHF14 interacts with histones via its PHD1 and PHD3 domains indicating its role in epigenetic regulation. It is involved in chromatin-mediated transcriptional regulation and chromatin dynamics. During cell division, PHF14 is shown to be directly bound to and co-localized with KIF4A to form a functional complex. PHF14 is shown to be overexpressed in lung cancer and this overexpression is associated with poor prognosis of non-small cell lung carcinoma. (Ref.: Zhang, L., et al. (2017).
